The impetus for its creation came in the wake of the dramatic drop of underrepresented students in the UC system, due to the passage of Proposition and UC Regent Standing Policy 1 SP1. Organizations from the historically underserved communities at UCLA pressured the University of California office of the President to allocate funding to all UC campuses for the creation of a funding source for student-initiated, student-run programs. For students living in underserved communities, there has historically been a lack of adequate college outreach services and relevant educational support for the K education system.
Originally from Alberta, Edward Takayanagi attended university in Japan on the Monbusho Scholarship and lived in Kyoto for 4 years studying archaeology. After working for a Japanese plastics company for a number of years and practicing law in Vancouver, he is currently working Coast Mental Health Foundation. Edward has also been the president of the Vancouver Mokuyokai Society, is on the board of the Tomoe Arts Society and volunteers frequently with other community organizations.
The committee meets on a monthly basis on the first Wednesday of each month. The Community Outreach Committee has a long track record of successful projects. This committee is an excellent place for members who have an interest in community service.

August 5, On this day exactly seven years ago, a known white supremacist opened fire with a 9 millimeter semiautomatic handgun in the Oak Creek, WI gurdwara, and killed six people. We are still mourning the devastating impact of this violence today.
