The Cognitive Learning Theory explains why the brain is the most incredible network of information processing and interpretation in the body as we learn things. The theory has been used to explain mental processes as they are influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, which eventually bring about learning in an individual. Cognitive Learning Theory implies that the different processes concerning learning can be explained by analyzing the mental processes first. It posits that with effective cognitive processes, learning is easier and new information can be stored in the memory for a long time.
Because most of your potential participants will likely be young adults, it is important to understand some basic principles about how adults prefer to learn. This information should be incorporated into your program design and content delivery, as well as your instructor-training program. Remember, adults — even young adults — bring life experience to the program.

John Paul Minda is an associate professor of Psychology at Western whose innovative research works to answer questions about how and why humans organize information into categories and concepts and how the resulting conceptual structure influences thinking and behaviour. This work extends into research on expert performance, complex learning, and understanding the neuro-cognitive effects of mindfulness meditation practice. Minda has also received funding for special projects through Mitacs, to support connections between academia and business initiatives in his research.
